Day of The Dead

Thinking about throwing a pink skulls party this year?  I just love the idea of making sugar skulls at this party (for tweens and teens) or just as a fun Halloween activity!  Thanks, Amy L., for the great idea!

To Make the Skulls:

These skulls are so fun and easy to make. The recipe is as follows:
For every 1 cup of sugar used, add 1 teaspoon of meringue powder (found in the cake aisle of your local craft store) and 1 teaspoon of water.
Mix with your hands until you get a sand texture, and pack into skull molds.
Take the sugar out of the mold immediately, and set it aside to dry for twelve hours. You can use a two-piece mold and glue the two pieces together with royal icing (recipe follows). I found my skull molds at a specialty cake store. You can also find them online at www.mexicansugarskulls.com, along with more detailed instructions.
Use colored royal icing to decorate your skulls. Embellish them with anything you want, such as sequins, dragees, or cupcake sprinkles. (Puffy paint doesn’t work though. We tried using sparkly glue and it started to eat away at the sugar.)

Royal Icing Recipe:

Mix 2 lbs. powdered sugar, 1/2 cup meringue, and 2/3 cup warm water with an
electric mixer for ten minutes. Separate the icing out into different bowls and color with food paste from your local craft store. The best way to pipe the icing on is through a pastry bag, but you can also use a plastic bag with the corner snipped off; just be careful not to cut too big of a hole. Royal icing is extremely runny, but will harden nicely.
There’s a huge variety of molds there are out there, so you can make almost any shape to fit your celebration theme.
